Fast answer

Use Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing or Layout > Before/After spacing to reduce extra space.

Steps

  1. 1

    Select the target paragraph

Select the paragraph or the whole document you want to tighten.

  2. 2

    Open line spacing controls

Open Line and Paragraph Spacing on the Home tab and choose a smaller value such as 1.0.

  3. 3

Adjust paragraph spacing before and after

If the text still looks loose, reduce the Before and After spacing on the Layout tab.

  4. 4

    Use Paragraph settings if needed

For tighter control, open the Paragraph dialog and switch line spacing to Exactly or At least.

Common pitfalls

  • Changing line spacing alone may not help if paragraph spacing before or after is still large.
  • Document styles can keep spacing rules, so check styles when you need consistent spacing everywhere.

FAQ

Why does the text still look wide after reducing line spacing?

Paragraph spacing before and after is often the cause. Reduce those values on the Layout tab too.

Can I change spacing for the whole document at once?

Yes. Select the entire document with Ctrl+A and then change the spacing.
