Reverse Parking Tips: Steps for Drivers Who Find It Hard
Reverse parking gets much easier once you break it into steps. Here are four steps that raise your success rate, plus the points where most people stumble. To build a top-down feel for it first, try the parking game at the bottom of this page.
1. Pull forward alongside the space
Drive forward past the space you want, stopping where your rear wheels are level with its entrance. Keep roughly one meter between your car and the space.
2. Turn the wheel fully and reverse
Shift into reverse, turn the wheel fully toward the space, and back up slowly. Watch your rear wheel against the space lines in the side mirror as you go.
3. Straighten the wheel once you are parallel
As your car lines up parallel with the space, bring the wheel back to straight. Too early or too late and you end up offset — fine-tune while watching the mirrors.
4. Back straight in and adjust
Reverse straight while checking the gap on both sides. Drifted too close to one side? Pull forward once and correct — that is normal.
Checkpoints when it is not working
- Keep your speed down. The slower you move, the easier corrections become.
- In the mirrors, watch the rear wheels and the lines — focus behind you, not the hood.
- Off course? Just pull forward and retry. Not forcing it in one go is the real trick.
Get the feel in a game first
Before the real car, it helps to internalize how the car swings when you turn the wheel — seen from above. The parking game guides your driving line, making it a great place to practice corrections.
