Snake Game Tips: 5 Ways to Grow Longer and Survive

The rules of the snake game are simple, yet it gets harder the longer your snake grows. If you keep crashing into your own body, these five tips will help you survive longer and grow bigger. Read them, then put them into practice in the browser snake game.

1. Circle the outer edge — stay out of the middle

Loop around the edge of the board and only cut inside to grab food. The more you make small turns in the middle, the easier it is to trap yourself inside your own body. When in doubt, return to the outer lane — this alone will greatly extend your survival time.

2. Once you get long, weave in an S shape

From around length 20, weave back and forth in an S pattern, like plowing a field. It keeps your body packed neatly into one area and makes dead ends much less likely.

3. The path behind your tail opens up

The tail moves forward every turn, so the cell it occupies now will soon be free. When you are about to get boxed in, chasing your own tail is the classic escape route.

4. Reversing means instant game over — do not mash keys

Pressing the key opposite to your direction will not turn you around, but mashing two quick turns often causes an unintended U-turn straight into your own neck. Make one clean turn per cell.

5. As the speed rises, look 3 cells ahead

When every bite makes you faster, steer by looking two or three cells ahead of your head, not at it. Before darting at food, take a split second to confirm you have an exit after eating it.

Length milestones (rank table)

The KeyboardGym snake game grades your length with a rank. Length 10 is reachable with outer-edge circling alone; aim for Python rank (length 20) next.
